Kindergarten celebrates its centenary

The young are celebrating the old today at centennial celebrations for a North Dunedin kindergarten building. The Kelsey Yaralla Kindergarten is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its Trent Ave building with special lessons and something for the older members of its community. Head teacher Danielle Atkinson said the children had been learning about the legacy of the kindergarten’s founder, Lavina Kelsey. Miss Kelsey, originally from England, founded the kindergarten with a donation of £100 from Eadith Walker, a woman from Yaralla, in Australia. The kindergarten has been educating children for 130 years, but spent 30 years moving around before it settled in the Trent Ave building 100 years ago.
