"This is such a heinous crime.... You can't kill citizens indiscriminately and say I have my family, my sons, my daughters, etc.," Chief Justice of India J.S. Khehar, who was heading a bench, told Mohd Naushad's counsel during a hearing. "You cannot have both - either this or that.... Once you kill, that's the end of your family," Justice Khehar said, dismissing Naushad's plea. Dey told the court the agency had already challenged the life term the convict had been handed and sought enhancement of the punishment to death. Delhi High Court had in 2012 altered Naushad's death penalty to that of life term.
