A man sentenced to life imprisonment 13 years ago has made a new claim for why he murdered teenager Michael Hutchings. Supplied Michael Hutchings was murdered in the South Otago town of Kaitangata. Patterson told the board Hutchings was involved in a crash where a young boy was hurt. Patterson told Hutchings to leave for Australia, but that did not work out, and he went to live with Patterson and his partner. The board told Patterson his victim’s family were opposed to him being released on parole.
