Killers behind wheels: Govt must heed judge’s lament and curb rash driving

A judgment given by a Delhi court last week has raised a point of grave concern that the government must deal with, at once. Gujarat, for instance, passed an amendment in March this year increasing the maximum sentence for cow slaughter from seven to 14 years. In Haryana, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, slaughtering a cow can put one behind bars for 10 years. In fact, as of March this year, 99.38 per cent of India’s population lives in areas where cow protection laws are applicable. However, the government would do well to look at the obverse of this situation, namely, that the punishment for killing a person should not be any less than the punishment for slaughtering a cow.
