Ketum abuse rising with over 14,000 people held since 2015 - Nation


KUALA LUMPUR: More than 14,000 people have been arrested over the past two years for abuse of ketum leaves, including possessing and distributing the prohibited plant. “In 2015, 3,389 people were arrested for consuming and distributing ketum leaves, followed by 5,523 last year. Some 125,177kg of ketum leaves, along with 417,143 litres of boiled ketum, have been seized during various raids, added Comm Mohd Mokhtar. Based on the arrests and seizures, he said the abuse of ketum leaves, especially on the east coast, has spiked. At present, enforcement against the abuse of ketum is classified under the Poisons Act 1952.
