Kerala: Trawling ban to be effective from midnight


Kerala wanted the trawling ban be limited to 47 days, starting on June 14; a demand rejected by the Union Government. The forty seven-day trawling ban along the coast of Kerala will come into effect from midnight, during which the Coast Guard, Marine Enforcement, Navy and Coast Police will coordinate and work to ensure fool proof security for traditional fishermen who will be going to sea during the ban period. The state government will hire fifteen boats for rescue work during the ban period. Meanwhile, the state government has directed the civil supplies authorities to ensure free ration for eligible fishermen during the period. The colour code for mechanized boats during the ban period has been made compulsory.
