The Education Minister, Mr. C.H. Mohamed Koya, to-day [July 26] justified the decision to extend the period of closure of all educational institutions till August 7. The motion was disallowed by the Speaker. Mr. Koya said that there was already unrest among the students, as seen in their demonstrations and Gheraos. The Government had at first limited the closure to three days, but the food situation had not improved and the parents and teachers, who feared that “anything may happen at any time,” favoured the extension of the period.
