Wamatinga is part of a group of nine senators from the Mt Kenya region who voted for Gachagua's removal. In a surprising turn, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who had publicly defended Gachagua, also voted in favour of his impeachment. Despite their strong political ties, Wamatinga voted in favour of two counts and abstained from three others during the impeachment vote.
