Three Kenyan energy companies have been awarded grants to create thousands of green mini-grid connections in underserved communities in the country’s northern and south-western regions. Renewvia, Kudura and PowerHive have collectively been awarded grants of up to $7.3 million by Stichting Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa (CEI Africa) to set up around 21,110 connections. Renewvia Energy Kenya Ltd was awarded a results-based financing (RBF) grant of up to $4.2m to unlock approximately 14,000 new connections. PowerHive East Africa Limited was awarded an RBF grant of up to $300,000 to unlock approximately 1,202 connections in rural south-western Kenya. The RBF grant funding will be disbursed upon completion of new electricity connections, said CEI.
