Kenya: More than 500,000 homes targeted for electricity access

The government of Kenya aims to connect at least nine out of 10 homes to electricity by 2030. The country’s Energy and Petroleum Principal Secretary Alex Wachira said recently that the government will connect 566,000 homes to the electricity grid over the next few years. As of June 2022, 77% of the Kenyan population had access to grid electricity, higher than the estimated 50% average in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the International Trade Administration, the access rate for urban areas stands at 100%, while rural Kenya stands at 65%. He said 322 projects would be implemented around the country this year under the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP).
