Kenya : Kenya to allow imports of cheap drugs

Anthony Toroitich, PPB’s head of trade affairs, is spearheading the development of the regulatory framework for parallel importation. This follows a Government proposal to allow the parallel importation of cheaper medicines. “Currently, there is neither a regulatory framework for regulation of parallel importation, nor price control of essential medicines. The industry’s regulatory agency, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), has proposed a framework that would see international pharmaceutical firms bring in cheaper versions of medicines. “It is common for pharmaceutical firms to sell the same products at significantly different prices in different markets around the world,” he said.
