I’d really hoped she’d emerge as the fiery operator who could beat Donald Trump and halt the erosion of American civility. Busing was a highly contentious policy aimed at forcing integration by transporting black students to all-white schools, and white students to black schools. Most busing involved black students being moved to suburban white schools, which black parents disliked. They’d have preferred a policy that ensured black schools were just as good as white schools. Trump beat Hillary Clinton by winning states and demographic groups she should have carried easily.
