Last year was another record for the U.S. in mass killings, 41 in all, for a death toll topping 210. He knew Hitler hated Jews, but he didn’t know why. The answer is in the location, the intended victims, and the addled state of mind of the attacker. Antisemitism runs through human existence, leaping borders and evading time, from Egyptian pharaohs to Russian czars to Nazi death camps. Unless it is taught, each new generation is farther from any direct experience of past horrors, or people who lived through it.
