It’s been 30 years, and we’re still waiting for a Liberal government to keep its promise to repeal the GST. However you frame it, Freeland’s fighting words would appear at odds with just about everything the Liberals have practised in military matters for a generation. It was a Liberal government that oversaw the lowest moments of Canada’s military, the “decade of darkness” under former prime minister Jean Chrétien. Details were provided later by Sajjan, and largely involve tacking billions more onto the deficit sometime down the road, when Trudeau, Freeland and Sajjan may all be otherwise employed. Maybe that’s why the prime minister allowed her to give a speech promoting policies the Liberals have never followed.
