Big data is a term for data sets that are so large or complex that traditional data processing application software is inadequate to deal with them. Big data challenges include capturing the data, its storage, analysis, and information privacy. The disciplines required to look at big data have been with us for many years. The data scientist’s key role is around the management of the data — the data journey, and the selection of products. The important message is that data, whether traditional or big data, should be treated with respect.
