We are reminded of this matter of independence in the wake of the ongoing discussion on the issue of speakership of the House of Representatives. There is now a great deal of discussion in the House which has to decide on whom to elect speaker. The House today has a super-majority of pro-administration members, but the PDP-Laban cannot elect the speaker by itself. He would rather have the House make its own selection; that would serve to emphasize the independence of the House.
