Katiba at 10: Landmark that deepens democracy

Today, August 27, 2020, is the 10th anniversary of the current Constitution — a landmark social contract inspired by citizens’ desire for a country characterised by participatory governance, inclusive development, human rights and the rule of law. It was borne out of extensive consultation by Kenyans who debated intensely and passionately to ensure a people’s constitution. National values and principles of governance — including the rule of law, democracy, public participation, human rights, equality, social justice, accountability and sustainable development — are given prominence. The Bill of Rights recognises and protects human rights and fundamental freedoms and is a framework for social, economic and cultural policies. It is an affirmation that good governance is an enabler and a powerful impetus for sustainable development.
