With her salty laugh and her no-nonsense advice, Hazel McCallion has charmed us, enthralled us, and loved us. To be honest, Hazel and I had some pretty heated conversations about development issues – especially when it came to the Greenbelt. Hazel was always impatient with the exclusion of women from work, politics or sports. Hazel tells a great story about the 1979 fight to get women hired as garbage collectors in Mississauga. I told him I was teaching and working with young people and asked him what advice he would give them.
