Karen Walker and Cook Islands artisan head to Buckingham PalaceSupplied A team of Cook Islands artisans helped create a one-of-a-kind gown styled on tivaivai (quilt). The New Zealand fashion designer has partnered with Cook Islands craftswomen to create a gown that combines her eccentric style and traditional Cook Islands tivaivai (quilts). Supplied Walker and Māmā Tukua Turia got to showcase their final product at a reception at Buckingham Palace. Designers from the 53 Commonwealth countries created dresses for the event, including Walker and Kūki 'Airani Creative Māmās' tivaivai style gown. Traditionally bed coverings, tivaivai is central to Cook Islands culture, made in patchwork style and gifted to family and community to mark special occasions.
