An award-winning sixth dan black belt in karate offered an insight into the standardisation of techniques to exponents of the martial art in Timaru at the weekend. Japanese Karate Association (JKA) sensei and chief instructor Karl Naoroji, who has been practising the martial art for more than 40 years and trained in India and Japan, ran the two-day seminar. Timaru club sensei Lizelle Pelser said Naoroji taught the standardisation of techniques in Timaru. JOHN BISSET/Stuff Zoe Tytler,16, practices her technique under the instruction of chief instructor sensei Karl Naoroji at JKA Timaru. Naoroji has represented India and New Zealand in various international championships and is an internationally qualified judge, referee, instructor and examiner according to JKANZ.
