Invoking the classic definition of fascism, Karat draws a parallel between Modi and Recep Erdogan of Turkey and says both are authoritarian but not fascist. The present party general secretary untiringly equates the Modi government with Adolf Hitler. Karat acknowledges that the "Hindutva ideology" and "chauvinistic nationalism" being used by the Modi government was dangerous but refuses to accept they pose a threat of fascism. The hardliners in the party, led by Karat, are opposed to any kind of dalliance with the Congress. "If he (Karat) accepts the BJP as a fascist party, then the alliance with the Congress to save democracy is justified," said a CPM leader, expressing dismay over the article.
