Kaine: Clinton’s ‘deplorables’ characterization doesn’t merit an apology

(Melina Mara/The Washington Post)RICHMOND — Hillary Clinton’s assertion that half of Donald Trump’s supporters fit into a “basket of deplorables” is not something for which she needs to apologize, her Democratic running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine (Va.), said Saturday in an interview. In her remarks, Clinton suggested that a large segment of Trump’s supporters were not persuadable because Trump appeals to and amplifies their racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic viewpoints. "To just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump's supporters into what I call the 'basket of deplorables,'" Hillary Clinton said at a New York fundraiser on Sept. 9. On Saturday afternoon, Clinton issued a statement saying that she regretted using the word “half” in her Friday remarks about Trump's supporters.
