Although both moves were controversial at the time – then-Liberal party president Stephen LeDrew described Chrétien’s plan as “dumb as a bag of hammers” – the parties survived. (After all, if their party does manage to win power, they’re the only ones with a guaranteed spot in cabinet.) The fact that this was apparently happening on a regular basis right up until a few months ago is, frankly, astonishing.
