KMT leadership race heats up before Saturday vote

The Kuomintang (KMT) chairmanship election reached a feverish pitch as campaigning climaxed Friday before party members vote Saturday. Rain in Greater Taipei couldn't wash away high spirits as the six candidates fanned out across Greater Taipei for the final push. Former Vice President Wu Den-yih, stumping in New Taipei, called on the party to remain united. He promised to support Saturday's winner and said that if he won, he would seek counsel from each of the runners-up. Ma experienced confidence that the unprecedented six-way race would not ultimately tear the KMT apart and promised to support whoever won in order to facilitate reform and pave the way for the party's return to power.
