KMA fails to elect Presiding Member after two rounds of voting


General News of Saturday, 21 February 2026Source: GNAThe Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has failed to elect a Presiding Member to chair the Assembly for the next two years, after two rounds of voting. In line with Section 27 of the Local Governance Act (Act 936), a Presiding Member must be elected by at least two-thirds of Assembly members. With the KMA comprising 66 members, a candidate requires a minimum of 44 votes to be declared successful. Earlier, Isham Alhassan and Kwame Agyemang withdrew their nominations for the position. A fresh meeting is expected to be convened within the next 10 days to conduct another election, as stipulated under Act 936.
