The Double Down was first released in New Zealand in 2011 amid much fanfare and criticism from health advocates. In an email to VIP customers the company said punters could get "secret access" to the Double Down at any of their New Zealand outlets on Sunday or Monday. Those eager to try the bunless burgers were told to ask for it in secret, with no mention of it on the menu.
