The hard truth is that the prime minister himself has dragged his party down. They vote for leaders, and on that score the prime minister has dug himself into a hole in the past six months. The Prime Minister’s Office had plenty of time to figure out the angles — the historical rights and wrongs, the moral issues, the legal implications, how various groups would react. Yet when it came the prime minister’s turn to respond, he was all over the place. It’s time the prime minister demonstrated that he has those qualities.
