June outlook: Cooler than last year and rainier than normal

For the first time in a year, this month was cooler and wetter than normal in the capital. Here’s our latest thinking:Given the cool first two weeks, June’s average temperature will probably end up near to very slightly warmer than normal, which is 75.2 degrees. The month has only been cooler than the current 30-year normal just a few times this century – most recently eight years ago in 2009. While some models are actually predicting cooler temperatures, we suspect that warm overnight lows (thanks to wet soil) should keep the month near to warmer than normal. Most of the summers in which El Niño is developing have been wetter than normal (2002, 2004, 2006, 2009).
