Yet just three officials were sacked for misconduct in 2018, with a further seven demoted for bad behaviour. Other staff members working at the Commission’s huge Berlaymont headquarters in Brussels simply failed to turn up to work or went ‘administratively rogue’ within the building. ‘Once taxpayer money ends up in Brussels, people spending it lose any sense of ownership and accountability.
