The number of journalists killed, imprisoned and kidnapped around the world has leapt this year amid warnings that social media is fuelling hatred towards reporters. The most deadly country to work in was Afghanistan, where 15 reporters and media workers died, including nine in a double bombing in Kabul in April. Other danger zones included Syria, where 11 local journalists were killed, Mexico (nine) and Yemen (eight), according to Reporters Without Borders. More than half of those killed were deliberately targeted, including Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist murdered in Istanbul.
