July wages, household spending fall in Japan

New figures from the Japanese government show that both wages and household spending fell in July from a year earlier amid a resurgence in the coronavirus pandemic, NHK reports. Labor ministry data show that average total wages were down by 1.3 percent in yen terms from a year ago, to 3,480 dollars. Meanwhile, a survey by the internal affairs ministry shows that spending on household consumption dropped for the 10th straight month. That was down by 7.6 percent in yen terms from a year earlier. The ministry says the drop was mainly a result of lower spending on package tours, railway travel and drinking out.
