Julian Fellowes labelled 'sinister' cancel culture as 'naive': 'Just bewildering'


In recent years however, Lord Fellowes has been a very vocal critic of cancel culture. Last year, the screenwriter was scathing of the “sinister” effect social media had on free debate, while he claimed online platforms had perpetuated cancel culture. A year earlier he was critical of the “left-of-centre” metropolitan elite and described woke culture as “self-regarding”. Speaking to The Times, the screenwriter warned: “The danger of woke culture is that it is self-regarding. Lord Fellowes has been a Tory peer since 2011“[You are] constantly giving yourself little moral pats on the back.” In 2011, Lord Fellowes was elevated to a peerage and introduced to the House of Lords, where he sits on the Conservative benches.
