Environment Southland may not have had a clear view as to whether there needed to be an improvement in the quality of Southland's water bodies when it went into this week's appeals hearing, an Environment Court judge has suggested. Nineteen appellants, including Federated Farmers and Fish and Game, have appealed aspects of the proposed Southland Water and Land Plan. The plan aims to address declining water quality and manage land use activities that contribute to significant levels of contaminants. McCallum-Clark said in order to maintain water quality it was necessary for there to be no increase in the amount of contaminants into the water bodies in the region.
