In the latest of many ongoing court battles to release the president’s elusive finances, a federal judge dealt Trump a key setback by rejecting his attempt to block the Manhattan district attorney from obtaining copies of his tax returns. Moments after the ruling, Trump’s attorneys quickly appealed the decision, and the appeals court agreed to temporarily block the order. Trump’s team has criticized District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.’s investigation for being politically motivated, while Vance has accused the president and his lawyers of deliberately trying to delay their investigation. In response to the subpoena, which seeks eight years of his tax returns, Trump and his lawyers filed suit to block the request, on the basis that sitting presidents are immune from criminal investigations.
