Over the past decade, more than 1,000 journalists and media workers have been killed, which represents approximately one death every four days. During that same time, thousands more journalists have been threatened with imprisonment, torture, and other forms of coercion designed to silence critical voices. In order to be a credible exporter of international norms, our federal government must come to terms with the troubling reality that Canadian journalists regularly face challenges holding governments to account here at home. Loading...Rather than cast a shadow on our international reputation, the federal government has seemingly convinced itself that Canadian journalists should count their lucky stars and carry on. In fact, suppressing discussion of our inadequate and outdated policies only puts Canadian journalists at greater risk of having their freedoms infringed upon.
