Schooling, a student at the University of Texas who idolized Phelps while growing up, won Singapore its first Olympic gold medal . Joseph Schooling of Singapore won gold in the 100-meter butterfly at the Rio Olympics on Friday night, followed by USA’s Michael Phelps,Chad Le Clos of South Africa and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh in a three-way tie. Schooling, 21, completed the 100-meter butterfly ― one of swimming’s most difficult strokes ― with an Olympic record time of 50.39 seconds. Phelps was hoping to collect his 23rd Olympic gold medal. On Thursday, the most decorated Olympian of all time broke a more than 2,000-year-old record set by the ancient Greek runner Leonidas of Rhodes in 152 B.C.
