Mourinho handed McTominay his professional debut at Manchester United in 2017. The academy graduate came on as a second-half substitute against Arsenal in May of that year before making his first start against Crystal Palace later that month. McTominay was a regular in Mourinho’s squads in his final campaign in charge at United before being sacked in December 2018. On occasion he used the Scotland international as a defender in a back three, showing the faith he had in him.
