Mourinho had a strained relationship with the French World Cup winner during his time at Old Trafford before he was sacked in December. He referred to the midfielder as "His Excellency" and revealed how he was upset after being offered a solution to allow his chauffeur to catch up with the team bus. "I told him: 'If we went to London and you wanted to stay there, that would be one thing. I went to the press conference and when I arrived at the team bus, parked beside it was a Rolls-Royce with his chauffeur. Mourinho also touted Germany as the possible destination for his return to management as he spoke at the event in Portimao.
