Dalian travelled to last season's runners-up Shanghai SIPG on the opening day of the season having been bolstered by their three high-profile new signings. Carrasco and Gaitan joined Dalian, who were playing their first match in the CSL after being promoted, a few days later, with both players leaving Atletico Madrid. Fonte failed to finish the match after being substituted with 10 minutes to play - when his team were already 6-0 down.
