Join effort to eliminate pesticide use in farming

A recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control study found that 80% of Americans have glyphosate in their urine (www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jul/09/weedkiller-glyphosate-cdc-study-urine-samples). As Howe’s column points out, glyphosate-based herbicides are used on a large number of non-GMO crops as a pre-harvest desiccant to kill, dry and ripen these crops. This practice results in high levels of glyphosate residues in the harvested crops and is the major gateway for glyphosate to enter our diets. There is a large coalition of organizations in Massachusetts that are pressing for reduction/elimination of synthetic pesticide use. Northeast Organic Farming Association/Massachusetts Chapter is one of these organizations and spells out its priorities regarding pesticide reduction/elimination on its website (www.nofamass.org/policy/).
