MUAR: A 28-year-old Johor para athlete died after a fire broke out at his family home in Taman Pagoh Jaya here in Pagoh. The weightlifting para athlete, Mohd Ata Maarof, who represented the state and won bronze in the Para Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2018 in Perak, suffered 80% burns on his body. He was alone, as his mother went for a haj pilgrim class at Masjid Pagoh when the incident occurred. The wheelchair-bound Mohd Ata has been staying with his mother within the last five days and is supposed to return to Kuala Lumpur today. In a statement, Johor youth, sports, entrepreneurship development and cooperatives committee chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali said that the death of Mohd Ata was a huge loss for the state.
