Near the end of World War II, at age 18, Mr. Warner joined the Navy and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station near Chicago. Discharged as a petty officer third class in 1946, he enrolled at Washington and Lee University, where he received a degree in engineering. Graduating in 1949, he enrolled in law school at the University of Virginia but interrupted his studies and joined the Marine Corps during the Korean War. After being discharged at the rank of captain, he returned to Charlottesville and received a law degree in 1953.
