Douglas, whom Justice Stevens replaced in 1975, and Stephen J. Justice Stevens joined the Navy as an intelligence officer on Dec. 6, 1941 — the day before Pearl Harbor was attacked. In a concurring opinion, Justice Stevens defended Kennedy from a blistering dissent by Justice Antonin Scalia. In retirement, Justice Stevens had an active and, at times, controversial second career as a writer and commentator.
