John McFetridge’s One or the Other paints Montreal streets with ‘the evocative power of poetry’


To some of us, those words have the evocative power of poetry. They appear in One or the Other (ECW Press), a novel by John McFetridge, the third in his series about Eddie Dougherty, a young beat cop in 1970s Montreal. Sometimes Dougherty gets a temporary posting as a detective but he soon slides right back to constable. The Corridart incident was reported in art and planning magazines far away but not much discussed in Montreal. But the book reads more like a sweet love letter to the Montreal of four decades ago.
