John Ivison: With pledge to lower wireless prices, Liberals insist on solving problems that don’t exist

It is inconvenient then, that the market has already done its work by reducing prices. Unlimited plans from Rogers, Telus and Bell currently offer 20GB at maximum speed for $75, down from $95 – a reduction close to the government’s 25 per cent target. One way the federal government can impact pricing is by setting aside new wireless spectrum for smaller carriers at much reduced prices than those paid by the big telcos. It has already taken a preliminary view that there should be more opportunities for mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), companies that piggyback on the facilities built by the big telcos. The CRTC is looking at whether to mandate access for MVNOs as a way to boost competition and lower prices.
