John Ivison: Liberals’ carbon pricing along with pipeline approval a winner with voters, poll suggests

Respondents were given a brief description of the Trudeau government’s new national carbon tax plan and asked whether they think it is good, acceptable or bad. Nationally, 69 per cent thought the idea of introducing a national price on carbon in 2018 is good or acceptable. No doubt there will also be hard-core opposition to a carbon tax. With the Abacus poll in mind, it makes it almost inexplicable the federal Conservative Party has no better contribution to the carbon/pipeline debate than the burnt offering that failed last time. But the new Abacus poll suggests there is a path to consensus by moving to cleaner energy, while moving Canada’s economic lifeblood to new markets.
