John Ivison: It’s absurd, but Liberals will likely get away with racking up whopping deficits

Since the Trudeau government’s unprecedented gamble with the public finances is far from little, it suggests the fallout from fall economic statement will be limited. The forecast that $32 billion will be added to already whopping deficits over the next five years, with no apparent plan to get back to balanced budgets, should cost the government support. The numbers involved are so huge and the government’s efforts to cloud the issue so effective that the Liberals will probably get away with it. Conservative interim leader Rona Ambrose tried to unscramble the issues brought up by the fall economic statement during question period. It may be trivial by comparison, but the $1,500-a-head “pay to play” fundraisers are likely to be a bigger threat to the Trudeau government’s longevity than running up $130 billion in deficits.
