John Burningham, the children’s author and illustrator behind some of the 20th century’s most enduring children’s books, has died at the age of 82. Photograph: Linda Nylind for the Guardian“No one creates a more perfect picture book than John Burningham. His writing is touching, funny and profound; his illustrations are works of art,” said children’s laureate Lauren Child, when Burningham won the Booktrust award in 2018. His first picture book, Borka – subtitled The Adventures of a Goose With No Feathers – won him the UK’s highest accolade for illustrators, the Kate Greenaway Medal, in 1963. Judith Kerr, author of The Tiger Who Came to Tea, said that his picture book Humbert, about a working horse pulling the Lord Mayor’s coach, inspired her own career.
