Johan Steyn, British jurist who condemned U.S. policies at Guantanamo, dies at 85

Although English was not his native language, Lord Steyn became known for an ability to express complex legal ideas in simple terms. In a landmark decision, Lord Steyn was among the judges who overturned that argument by a 3-to-2 majority. Lord Steyn was often critical of Blair’s decision to support the U.S.-led involvement in the Iraq War after the terrorist attacks of 2001. Lord Steyn retired from his judgeship in 2005 and became chairman of Justice, one of Britain’s leading human rights organizations. “I regard freedom of expression,” Lord Steyn said, “as the primary right without which one cannot have a proper functioning democracy.”
