England had done so well, too, to drag their way back into this second Test on the second day before that dramatic intervention from Siraj in the first over after tea. Not that Root, who moved past Graham Gooch into second place in England’s Test run-scoring table, proceeded totally without alarm. That England had a much better second day was initially down to the man who had virtually been written off by the England management before the game. At 364 all out, India had still done much better than Root would have hoped when he decided on Thursday to bowl first. It is still enough to leave India on top but while there is Root, unbeaten on 48 with England on 119 for three and 245 behind, there is still hope.
